Karen G. Horowitz

Karen Horowitz is a registered patent attorney and member of the intellectual property law firm of Seager Tufte Wickhem. She is currently based in New Jersey, and has practiced for many years in New York as well.

Karen’s practice focuses on patent prosecution with an emphasis on developing strategic patent portfolios for her clients. Her practice encompasses many phases of client portfolio management, including U.S. and foreign patent prosecution as well as patent assertion, and providing legal opinions on freedom-to-operate, patentability, infringement, and validity. She has provided careful counseling for navigating freedom-to-operate issues as well as for assertion of patents and negotiation of licensing terms. Karen has provided prosecution-based counsel in various patent litigations resulting in seminal court opinions. She has also conducted due diligences in connection with sales and acquisitions of patent portfolios, business divisions, and selected technologies, and has worked on numerous development agreements and license agreements.

Prior to joining Seager Tufte Wickhem, Karen worked in large New York intellectual property law firms, patent departments of large General Practice law firms, and as in-house counsel for Fortune 500 and multinational corporations.

Karen earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Princeton University with an intent to become a patent attorney. She started her career in the medical arts group of the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 1990. She returned to her home town of New York to attend, and graduate from, Fordham University Law School’s evening division while working as a patent agent in a prestigious IP boutique firm in New York.

Karen has experience prosecuting patent applications in the mechanical, electromechanical, and chemical arts. Karen also has extensive experience with design patents, both domestic as well as international.
